The Rankin County Youth Drug Court (C.H.A.N.C.E.) is a dispositional alternative offered to children that have been referred to the Youth Court for delinquent charges with drug and alcohol issues or who have drug or alcohol charges. The participants must be in the age range of 12-17 and want to get off drugs. There is a referral process that helps identify prospective participants who have substance abuse issues that could benefit from the Drug Court. The participant and a close family member--preferably the parent or guardian--must agree to undergto intense therapy at Region 8 Mental Health; Drug and Alcohol Treatment at New Roads; group, individual and family therapy; submit to numerous random drug tests weekly and any other stipulation the Drug Court Team places on them. Because drug abuse is becoming an increasing problem in teens today, Youth Court Judge Tom Broome believes that C.H.A.N.C.E. has become a great asset to Rankin County. This program offers intense therapy and supervison to the child and the entire family unit, taking 8 to 18 months to complete. There is a reward system in place to give the participants an incentive to do well while in the program. These incentives may be given for having a clean drug screen, attending all meetings that week, opening up in therapy, and so on. When the child has completed all requirements, he/she will successfully graduate and will receive a final incentive. This program has been operating for over three years now; a number of children have successfully graduated and have never returned to the legal system.
purchase the incentives for these students, Frontiers is donating all money collected for this purpose. Your donation can help a child get drug free! |
