Hall of Fame Nominees:
There has been an change in the date for Hall of Fame pictures.
Pictures will be taken on Monday, March 22, in the cafeteria at 7:30 a.m.
Please mark your calendar--every nominee must be photographed.
Scholarships:
Junior Auxiliary of Rankin County Scholarship
The Junior Auxiliary of Rankin County has is offering two $1,500 scholarships and twelve $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships will be based on need of financial assistance, academic achievements, school and community activities and offerings of financial aid. The applicants must submit an application, two letters of recommendation, an essay, a current photograph and a copy of student’s transcript.
Junior Auxiliary of Rankin County Tammy Lass Scholarship
The Junior Auxiliary of Rankin County will offer a $1,000 scholarship in memory of one of the members. The scholarship will benefit a high school graduating senior who has lost a parent to cancer or some other unforeseen tragic death. The scholarship will be based on loss of a parent to cancer or other unforeseen tragic death, need of financial assistance, academic achievements, school and community activities, and offerings of financial aid. The applicant must complete an application, two letters of recommendation, an essay, a current photograph, and a copy of the transcript.
There are two separate applications for these scholarships. Applications are available in the counselors’ office. Deadline for receipt is March 26, 2010.
Drew E Bergstrom Memorial Scholarship
Magnolia Federal Credit Union developed this scholarship program to honor the late David E. Bergstrom who was the President/CEO of the Magnolia Federal Credit Union. Magnolia Federal Credit Union offers tow $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to students who exemplify Dave’s courage, spirit and dedication. Scholarships will be awarded for students to pay for tuition, books, school supplies, etc. Applicants Must be a member of the Magnolia Federal Credit Union to apply for this scholarship. To apply applicants must complete an application, provide a copy of transcript and write an essay describing their post graduation plans and goals pertaining to the applicant’s chosen field of study.
Applications are available in the counselors’ office. Postmark deadline is May 31, 2010.
Scholarship Opportunity for Juniors
The Jackson Chapter of Executive Women International
The Jackson Chapter of Executive Women International is awarding one $2,000 scholarship and one $1,500 scholarship. Northwest May nominate one student. You must be in the top percent of class, demonstrate strong leadership and community service. To apply you must meet with your counselor to receive application to be considered as the nominee from Northwest Rankin High School.
Announcement
US Congressman Gregg Harper will sponsor a Military Day on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 9:00 to 12:00 at Madison Central High School. Representatives from the Military Academies will be present to answer questions.
Nita Wright Scholarship of Alpha Delta Kappa, Ii Chapter
The Alpha Delta Kappa Xi Chapter is offering a scholarship to eligible students. Preference is given to those majoring in education. To review all requirements and to pick up an application go to the counselors’ office.
All applications must be received by April 3, 2010.
Mississippi Municipal League
The Mississippi Municipal League is proud to announce a $2,000 general scholarship open to all high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited community or junior college, or university in Mississippi and is co-sponsored by Mississippi Power Company. A second $2,000 Limited Scholarship is restricted to the children or grandchildren of Mississippi Municipal officials and city employees who plans to attend an accredited community or junior college, college or university in Mississippi and is co-sponsored by Phelps Dunbar. This year a third scholarship of $2,000 to Mississippi Municipal Service Company Limited Scholarship to children or grandchildren of employees or elected officials of Mississippi municipalities that are members of the MMSC Liability Plan or the Workers Compensation Group. Applicants must write an essay on the topic “Why I Should consider a Career in Municipal Government” and complete an application.
Applications are available in the counselors’ office. Receipt of application is April 30, 2010.
Baptist for Women
Do you know a Strong woman between the ages of 14 to 18? To nominate a strong leader, mentor, and one who perseveres go to www.mbhs.org Scholarships to Hinds Community College and Belhaven will be given to the winners.

Northwest Rankin High School
PTSO Memorial Scholarship
The Northwest Rankin High School Parent Teacher Organization will sponsor the PTSO Memorial Scholarship. To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship students should meet the following application criteria:
Winner of the scholarship will be notified by the Northwest Rankin High School Parent Teacher Organization. Scholarships will be paid after enrollment has been verified. It will be the responsibility of the recipient to supply the Northwest Rankin Parent Teacher Organization the verification of enrollment and
a complete address of the school.
Applications are available in the counselor’s office. Postmark date is March 19, 2010.
The Foundation for Rankin County Public Schools Scholarship
The scholarship Committee of the Foundation will select the recipient with final approval by the Board of Directors during the granting cycle. The scholarship will be a one- time $1,000 award and one scholarship recipient will be chosen from each RCSD High School.
Selection Criteria:
Must be a student in the Rankin County School District
Must be a Senior
Must be involved in one or more high School sponsored activities and/or work part-time
Must have a demonstrated financial need
Must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 or higher
Must complete an application
Applications are available in the counselor’s office. All Applications must be RECEIVED by April 1.
Rankin County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Application
The Rankin County Chamber of Commerce and Hinds Community College will offer a scholarship to qualifying students. Each student must complete a Hinds Community College Scholarship Application, write a two page essay outlining your background, your feelings toward community service and objectives of your educational program, career plans, work experiences and financial need, three letters of recommendation, a transcript and complete the application. All applicants must be a resident of Rankin County and must be attending Hinds Community College Rankin branch in the fall

The NWRHS faculty, staff and administration is looking forward to the spring 2010 semester. We are always looking for better ways to communicate with our parents. Many of you remember we piloted an on-line notification system last year. We truly appreciate your patience with the trials and errors of that particular system. The Rankin County School District has partnered with a local company that provides the same service we piloted last year. The notification system will allow you to receive text messages or emails about NWRHS school events.

2. Enter the following code: NWRHS-Cougars and click the "Submit" button.
3. Enter a valid email address. You must be able to access this email address now. A code will be sent to you that is required in the next step. (Do not close your browser window after clicking submit.)
4. A code was sent to you via the email address you provided in the previous step. Please enter that code and click the "Submit" button.
5. On this page you can "Edit" the contact information for a Student associated with the email address provided. Or you can add a new student by clicking the "Add New Student" button.

Champions for Children Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to Mississippi seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of young people through mentoring. Awards range from $1,000-$5,000. Students who have 100 service hours of mentoring beginning June 1, 2009, are eligible to apply. An essay and four letters of recommendation along with the documentation of the 100 hours are required. Applications and information are available at www.msmentoring.org . Deadline is April 1, 2010.

Northwest Rankin High School’s
2009-2010 tardy policy was created for the following reasons:
1. to increase average daily attendance
2. to protect academic instructional time with limited interruptions
3. to produce NWRHS graduates who understand the importance of promptness
Tardy to School Policy: A student is considered tardy if they arrive to class after the tardy bell. A parent may check in the student or they may have a doctor’s excuse. If a parent is not able to check the student in and/or there is no doctor’s excuse, the penalty is as follows:
1st offense: ISS the rest of the block
2nd offense: ISS the rest of the block
3rd offense: ISS will be served ALL day unless a parent comes to the office to check the student in.
Tardy to Class Policy: A student is tardy to class if they arrive at class after the tardy bell. There will be no warning bell. Tardies are cumulative. This is per semester. The penalty is as follows:
1st tardy – Warning
2nd tardy – Warning
3rd tardy – Warning
4th tardy – One day BSD
5th tardy – Two days BSD
6th tardy – Two days BDS
7th tardy – One day ISS for each additional tardy

TOP TEN SCHOOL POLICY ITEMS TO KNOW
1:) Cell Phone/Electronic Device: Use of electronic communication devices, including cellular phones, personal digital assistance devices, lasers and related communication products (or other electronic items) by students is prohibited during school hours.
If you let a friend borrow your phone and it is taken up the same rules apply.
1st Offense: 1 week from date of offense
2nd Offense: 1 month from date of offense
3rd Offense: Until the last day of the school year

2:) Absence Policy: Doctor/dentist excuses or a note from a parent must be turned in on the day the student returns to school after being absent. (See page 14 of the student handbook for list of excused absences.) If a student accumulates 5 unexcused absences (no note/excuse received, reason for absence not allowed under district policy, during the entire school year, the student will be turned in to the Truancy Officer. (See page 17 of the Student Handbook).
There is an absence excuse form that can be filled out and submitted on the RCSD website.
If a student has a tardy or an absence (even excused) other than school related,
they cannot be considered for perfect attendance.
3.) Dress Code Policy: No saggy pants, no clothing with suggestive or questionable lettering or logos, modest tops for girls (no low cut tops, no halter tops or cropped tops where abdomen is showing, shirts must cover the top of the shoulders, skirts and shorts no less than 6 inches from the center of the knee (even with leggings worn underneath.)
See pages 72-73 of the student handbook for complete listing of dress code policy.
Penalties are: Student will be sent to the office immediately to call a parent for a change of clothes.
If no one can bring a change of clothes student will spend the rest of the day in ISS.
4.) When there are forms that a student needs to pick up (for example, beauty & beau forms, dance order forms, etc.)
can be found in the designated area of the cafeteria that says Student Forms.
5.) School attendance forms that are needed to get or renew a drivers license are located in Mrs. Reeves office
You must fill out and wait 24 hours to get the form. So plan ahead.
6.) Student lunches this year have increased to $2.75. NO carbonated beverages are allowed in the cafeteria.
Also NO fast food is allowed in the cafeteria.
You may bring a lunch from home but ARE NOT allowed to have other outside food brought into the cafeteria.
This rule will be strictly enforced.
7.) All bus information can be found in the Vine Street Office.
If you are to ride another bus you must see Mrs. Blanche McGriff.
8.) Parking Decals: Each student who drives a vehicle to school must purchase a parking decal. These will be purchased in homeroom beginning the 2nd week of school. The cost of the decal is $15.00.
At the end of August tickets will be issued if you do not have a parking decal.

10.) Check Out Procedure: A student may not be checked out by anyone, REGARDLESS of circumstances other than those listed on the yellow emergency form. No exceptions will be made unless school officials are notified in writing by note sent with child, brought to the school by parent, or faxed to the school office with proof of identification.
A fax will not be accepted unless the parent contacts Donna Guy prior to the dismissal.
DO NOT leave a message on voicemail.
No student will be allowed to dismiss during the last 30 minutes of the school day.
Additionally, students WILL NOT be dismissed while a District or State test is being administered.
