EVENTS Scholarships National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Central Mississippi Chapter The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Incorporated Central Mississippi Chapter, is a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the areas of Education, Health and Economic development. Graduating senior girls who demonstrate academic excellence of 3.00 GPA or higher, community service, leadership potential, writing ability and plan to attend a Historically Black College or University.Applications are available in the counselors’ office. Applications due by March 12, 2010. Robert Byrd Scholarship The Robert C. Byrd honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded scholarship program for graduating High School Seniors and eligible general education development graduates. The scholarship program is sponsored by the United States department of Education an administered by the Mississippi Department of Education. The selection is based on academic achievement and the promise of continued academic success.All eligible students must submit the Robert C. Byrd application, an official transcript, an official copy of ACT or SAT test results, information regarding extracurricular participation in grades 9-12, leadership activities, honors and awards, and a one page essay.Applications are available in the counselors’ office. Postmark deadline is March 2, 2010 Nita Wright Scholarship of Alpha Delta Kappa, Ii Chapter The Alpha Delta Kappa Xi Chapter is offering a scholarship to eligible students. Preference is given to those majoring in education. To review all requirements and to pick up an application go to the counselors’ office.All applications must be received by April 3, 2010. Mississippi Municipal League The Mississippi Municipal League is proud to announce a $2,000 general scholarship open to all high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited community or junior college, or university in Mississippi and is co-sponsored by Mississippi Power Company. A second $2,000 Limited Scholarship is restricted to the children or grandchildren of Mississippi Municipal officials and city employees who plans to attend an accredited community or junior college, college or university in Mississippi and is co-sponsored by Phelps Dunbar. This year a third scholarship of $2,000 to Mississippi Municipal Service Company Limited Scholarship to children or grandchildren of employees or elected officials of Mississippi municipalities that are members of the MMSC Liability Plan or the Workers Compensation Group. Applicants must write an essay on the topic “Why I Should consider a Career in Municipal Government” and complete an application.Applications are available in the counselors’ office. Receipt of application is April 30, 2010. Baptist for Women Do you know a Strong woman between the ages of 14 to 18? Northwest Rankin High SchoolPTSO Memorial Scholarship The Northwest Rankin High School Parent Teacher Organization will sponsor the PTSO Memorial Scholarship. To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship students should meet the following application criteria:
Winner of the scholarship will be notified by the Northwest Rankin High School Parent Teacher Organization. Scholarships will be paid after enrollment has been verified. It will be the responsibility of the recipient to supply the Northwest Rankin Parent Teacher Organization the verification of enrollment and a complete address of the school. Applications are available in the counselor’s office. Postmark date is March 19, 2010. The Foundation for Rankin County Public Schools Scholarship The scholarship Committee of the Foundation will select the recipient with final approval by the Board of Directors during the granting cycle. The scholarship will be a one- time $1,000 award and one scholarship recipient will be chosen from each RCSD High School.Selection Criteria:Must be a student in the Rankin County School DistrictMust be a SeniorMust be involved in one or more high School sponsored activities and/or work part-timeMust have a demonstrated financial needMust have a minimum GPA of 3.00 or higherMust complete an applicationApplications are available in the counselor’s office. Rankin County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Application The Rankin County Chamber of Commerce and Hinds Community College will offer a scholarship to qualifying students. Each student must complete a Hinds Community College Scholarship Application, write a two page essay outlining your background, your feelings toward community service and objectives of your educational program, career plans, work experiences and financial need, three letters of recommendation, a transcript and complete the application. All applicants must be a resident of Rankin County and must be attending Hinds Community College Rankin branch in the fallApplications are available in the counselor’s office. Ayn Rand Essay Contest Deadline: April 26 This s essay competition will be awarding over $40,000.00 to high school juniors and seniors. Essays must be no fewer than 800 words (nor more than 1600) and are written on one of three topics about the Ayn Rand novel “The Fountainhead”. For more information, go to www.aynrandeducation.com Home Team Hero Scholarship Deadline: May, 2010 Watson Quality Ford along with 16 WAPT announces the return of the "Home Team Hero" Scholarship Program for the 2009-2010 school year. This program awards a $1000.00 scholarship to one local 12th grade student each week based on outstanding achievements on the athletic field, classroom, and community. To nominate a local high school senior simply log on to www.wapt. com, click on the Watson Quality Home Team logo, and fill out the nomination form. ESF Scholarship Drawing Deadline: May Educational Services Foundation (ESF) will be drawing for a $1000.00 scholarship to be given to a high school senior graduating in May and entering college in Fall, 2010. To be eligible for this scholarship drawing, simply go to www.esfweb.com/Freebies.html and fill out the entry form. The winning entry will be drawn in May. FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): The Federal government will process this form free of charge. Almost every college or university requires this form. It asks families to supply information about their income and assets and is most easily filled out using a completed tax return (questions will refer to specific lines of the 1040 or 1040A). The FAFSA will be available in early January of the senior year and may be filed electronically at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Champions for Children Scholarship Scholarships are awarded to Mississippi seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of young people through mentoring. Awards range from $1,000-$5,000. Students who have 100 service hours of mentoring beginning June 1, 2009, are eligible to apply. An essay and four letters of recommendation along with the documentation of the 100 hours are required. Applications and information are available at www.msmentoring.org . Deadline is April 1, 2010.
AXA Achievement Scholarship The AXA Achievement Scholarship program offers college scholarships of $10,000 and $25,000 to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace. The scholarships are sponsored by the AXA Foundation. To apply you must be a US Citizen or Legal Residents, be a current high school senior who plans to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four year college or university in the US by fall 2010, demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in an activity in school, community or the workplace and be recommended by an unrelated adult who can attest to the student’s achievement. Hugh O'Brian Scholarship - Sophomores Register today and notify your counselor. Davidson College Belk Scholarship Any senior that plans to attend Davidson College, please see Mrs. Sullivan. Northwest Rankin may nominate one student for the John Montgomery Belk Scholarship. If you are nominated and are chosen for this scholarship it is valued at $45,030.
Jefferson Scholars Foundation The Jefferson Scholars Foundation of the University of Virginia is very pleased to announce an exciting event for public and private secondary schools in Mississippi. Through the generosity of alumni and friends of the University of Virginia, a Jefferson Scholarship endowment earmarked specifically for Graduates of Mississippi secondary schools has been established. The Foundation is very happy to expand the competition for a full scholarship to attend the University of Virginia to our area. TRANSCRIPT INFORMATION: Upon written request, a student’s transcript will be sent to any designated agency, college or school. The student must request, upon graduation, that a final transcript be sent to the agency or college of his choice. Additional transcripts are furnished upon request for a fee of $2.00 per copy. Transcript requests should be sent to Susan Moore in the counseling department of Northwest Rankin High School, 5805 Highway 25, Flowood, Mississippi 39232. All requests must include the following information: 1. name of student at the time of attendance at Northwest Rankin High School; 2. date of graduation or date last attended; 3. social security number and date of birth 4. address to mail transcript, number of copies, date of request, a telephone number to reach person requesting the information, a signature, and the $2.00 fee per copy. Graduation Requirements Subsequent graduation classes (including current students in K-8) must pass the four Subject Area Tests to earn a regular high school diploma.
