The Rankin County School District Child Nutrition program is a federally funded organization and includes the National School Breakfast Program (NSBP) as well as the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). These two programs, NSBP and NSLP, are implemented in public, nonprofit private schools, and residential child care institutions. The programs provide nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children every school day. They were established under the National School Lunch Act that was signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.

The RCSD Child Nutrition Department consists of 25 cafeterias in the Rankin County School District. The department employs approximately 200 employees who are responsible for preparing and serving meals at these sites.

The Child Nutrition Program is federally funded and abides by state and federal regulations which include:

  • Items that can be prepared
  • Items that can be sold as extra sales
  • The number of calories allowed for meals by following standardized recipes

Every meal served must meet USDA requirements. This allows for reimbursement of  free, reduced and full paying priced meals. The status of each child is strictly confidential.

The program serves teachers and staff, as well as visiting parents, who would like a meal.

To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online here, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to USDA by:
