Brandon, MS –Dr. Ruth Burgess is retiring after 18 years of dedicated service to the Rankin County School District (RCSD) Board of Education. During her tenure, Dr. Burgess was an integral part of numerous key initiatives that have had a profound impact on the district and its students. She played a vital role in bringing School Resource Officers (SROs) to every campus, ensuring that a nurse was available at every school, and she also supported workforce development initiatives that have provided valuable opportunities for our students to build skills for the future.
In addition, Dr. Burgess was part of the effort to pass the state’s largest bond issue, which has been a cornerstone in improving the district’s facilities and educational resources. Her thoughtful leadership extended to many other advancements in education, from supporting student safety and well-being to fostering academic growth and career readiness.
A lifelong advocate for education, Dr. Burgess has used her background in health science and educational leadership to guide the district toward success. Her personal connection to the district, with both of her children attending school in the Brandon Zone, gave her a unique perspective and a strong commitment to ensuring the best for all students.
Dr. Burgess stated, “One of the things that makes RCSD such a highly rated school district is the ability of the board members to work towards a common goal- educating the children of Rankin County. While we have not always been in agreement on every issue, we valued ourselves in putting on a cohesive face after a divided vote was taken and moving forward in a constructive manner. I owe much to my fellow board members through the years.”
Dr. Scott Rimes, Superintendent of the Rankin County School District, shared his heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for Dr. Burgess’s remarkable service to RCSD:
“Dr. Burgess’s contributions have left a lasting mark on RCSD, and her dedication to improving the educational experience for our students has been invaluable. On behalf of the entire Rankin County School District community, we extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Burgess for her commitment to education and service. We wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”
