Advanced Placement
- The Rankin County School District offers Advanced Placement in various content areas at all eight high schools. Each high school offers a minimum of one course for each of the following: English, math, science, and social studies.
- Multiple colleges provide college credit to students who score a 3 or higher on the AP exam. Depending on the course, score on the AP exam, and higher education institution, students can earn college credit.
- Various course options are intended to appeal to students who wish to learn more about certain content or who desire to build on their academic skills and knowledge.
Benefits
- Students who have "AP" on their transcripts show colleges they are willing to do college-level work & put in the time it takes to be more successful - making their college applications more competitive.
- By taking AP courses and earning a 3 or higher on the exam. students could receive college credit which would eliminate the need to enroll in. and pay for. those college courses.
- Research shows that students who take AP classes and exams are more likely to attend college & graduate on time.
- Because AP courses are more challenging than regular courses. they are weighted differently on a student's transcript.
- AP courses allow students to experience college-level content & rigor while building their confidence and time management in high school which can help them to be more successful in college or their careers.

Fees are due by a specified deadline. If you have significant financial need. you may be eligible for a $37 College Board fee reduction per AP Exam. Pending the availability of Federal funds. RCSD may assist with fees for students who meet certain assistance eligibility requirements. Check with your AP coordinator to find out what support may be available to you.
Eligibility
- All students are eligible to enroll and participate in Advanced Placement courses.
- All high schools will offer, and ensure students enroll in, AP courses for English, math, science, & social studies.
